Red Dead Redemption is a western, and a sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver for the Xbox and the PlayStation 2. It's not a direct continuation of the story, being non-related and set in a completely different time period. It was developed by Rockstar, most known for the Grand Theft Auto series. In 2018, the game received a critically acclaimed prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2. For a long time, RDR was available exclusively on the seventh generation consoles; only 13 years after its initial release was it ported on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The port also includes the horror comedy expansion Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.
Plot
The game's protagonist is John Marston, a former gang member trying to adapt to the rapidly changing 20th century Wild West. Government operatives have made their way to the prairie, and with them, so did industralization; the time of outlaws is at an end. Though John tries to lead an honest life, one day his past comes knocking, as the government gives him an offer he can't refuse: hunt down and kill his former comrades from the infamous gang of Dutch van der Linde, or never see his wife and son ever again.
The story is a classic western, epic in scope, telling of the end of the Wild West and its legendary gunslingers.
Gameplay
The game combines breathtaking landscapes and fast-paced action. We'll spend most of the game experiencing the complex plot, side stories and optional activities. The game is heavily inspired by iconic westerns, featuring duels at high noon and breakneck stagecoach chases. The game's vast open world is divided into regions, which can be explored rather freely. We'll get to visit small towns, vast prairie full of nature and wildlife, and the narrow passes of mountain ranges.
The world is dangerous and there's plenty of use for the revolvers at our belts. Not all encountered people are enemies, though. Many are charismatic, eccentric, offering worthwhile interactions and quests. During downtime, we can hunt wild animals or gamble at saloons.
