Exophobia is a first-person shooter for one player, in which we use an arsenal of firearms to get rid of alien units from the deck of a spaceship. The game is stylised as a retro production in metroidvania format. Exophobia is a commercial debut of a small studio from Portugal - Zarc Attack.
Plot
The action of the game takes place in far future in which we wake up on abandoned spaceship. However, we are not alone on it, because it is besieged by an alien race, which reacts to our sight with the desire of murder. In these unlivable conditions our task is to find out how we got here and what happened to the rest of the crew, and to escape before it's too late.
Mechanics
Exophobia features a single-player campaign, in which we observe the action from a first-person perspective. It is one of the dynamic and unforgiving shooters, where we use an arsenal of firearms to eliminate dozens of enemy soldiers and powerful monsters as bosses. Success will provide us with knowledge of the enemy's movements and discernment in the terrain.
During the adventure we explore various levels of the spaceship with a maze-like arrangement of rooms, in which in addition to enemies we can encounter numerous and deadly traps and hidden locations with secrets. There are also rooms on the ship, thanks to which we can improve the operation of our weapons, adding for example an ability that changes their functioning.
Technical aspects
Exophobia uses pixel art in a retro style with a limited colour palette, bringing to mind the iconic Doom game developed by id Software.
