Meifumado is an action RPG with metroidvania elements. Game was developed by independent team Old Bit Studio.
Plot
Meifumado takes us on a journey to the postapocalyptic universe inspired by Japan. Global conflict has brought the world to the edge of the abyss, and those who survived must fight for life every day. The people of Yamatai Island have learned that war never changes. Conflicting factions fight for influence there, among which the post-apocalyptic shogunate Bakuhan and warlike group Ryukai are the most prominent. We take on the role of the hero, who has to choose one side of the conflict and his actions will shape the further fate of this piece of land.
Game mechanics
Meifumado is a side-scrolling action game. Game gives us a vast world made up of a number of linked locations. Among them we can find both ruined buildings and dense forests, wastelands and dark undergrounds. Apart from the quests pushing the plot forward, we can find here extended side missions (offering the possibility of getting to know the island, its situation and its inhabitants better). Apart from that, there are numerous optional activities waiting for us to check out, such as caravan robberies (or their protection), martial arts tournaments or gambling games. We often make choices which influence not only our further fate, but also the future of the whole Yamatai.
Traversing the game world, we often have to use weapons. On our way there are both hostile people and monsters, led by powerful bosses. We eliminate enemies in close combat (using katana or mace) or from a distance (using a bow); besides, in the fight we use a variety of combat gadgets (such as shurikens or bombs, which we use to interrupt enemy attacks). Battles are dynamic and during them we have to show not only agility and reflexes, but also skillfully use special attacks and various combat abilities. What's interesting, the enemies adapt their behavior to the conditions on the battlefield. For example, when they attack in groups, weaker units hide behind the backs of stronger ones, stronger enemies try to surround us and attack from both sides, and enemies equipped with bows try to attack us from a safe distance.
As we progress we gain better and better equipment. Apart from that, a crafting system has been implemented in the game, thanks to which we can create new items or improve the ones we already have, as well as prepare meals and medicines that give us temporary buffs. In addition, as we progress we develop the hero by learning new abilities.
